Dialect — Terms of Use

Effective 19 October 2026 · Applies to the Dialect mobile app for iOS and Android and dialectjournal.com

The short version

Your journal is yours. You own what you write. We store it so the app can work, and you can export or delete it whenever you like.

You use Dialect at your own risk. It is provided as it is, and to the fullest extent the law allows, we are not responsible for what happens because you used it. Please read sections 10–13, which limit our liability and set out how disputes are handled.

Dialect is a companion, not a counsellor. Its Scripture suggestions and reflections are generated by a computer. They are no substitute for your church, a pastor, or professional help.

Premium is optional, bought through the App Store or Google Play, and renews until you cancel in your store account.

1. Agreeing to these terms

Dialect is an independent app operated by Burt Casey ("we", "us", "our"). These terms are a legal agreement between you and us. By creating an account, or by downloading, opening or using Dialect in any way, you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use Dialect. Questions go to support@dialectjournal.com.

2. Who can use Dialect

You must be at least 13 years old, and old enough to enter into a binding agreement where you live. If you are under 18, you may use Dialect only with the involvement and consent of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms on your behalf. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details private and for all activity on your account.

3. Your content

Everything you record, write, or photograph in Dialect remains yours. You give us a limited permission to store, process, and display it only as needed to run the app for you — for example, to transcribe it, find Scripture that meets it, title it, build your insights, and show it to people you choose to share it with. We do not sell it, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models. You are solely responsible for your content and for anything you choose to share with others.

4. Free use and Dialect Premium

Dialect can be used for free. Your first entries are fully analyzed so you can see what the app does; after that, a free account keeps your journal, search, and everything you have already received, and new Scripture suggestions and insights are part of Dialect Premium where it is offered.

5. What Dialect's suggestions are — and are not

Dialect uses automated tools, including Google's Gemini model, to suggest Scripture, name themes, and write reflections on what you record. These are offered only for personal prayer and reflection. They may be wrong, incomplete, or a poor fit. They are not the voice of God, and they are not pastoral, spiritual, medical, psychological, legal, financial, or any other professional advice. Using Dialect does not create a pastoral, counselling, or professional relationship with anyone. Weigh what it offers as you would any other source, test it against Scripture and the counsel of people who know you, and remember that every decision you make is your own.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact local emergency services or, in the United States, call or text 988. Dialect is not monitored, cannot respond to an emergency, and must never be relied on for one.

6. Other people

Dialect lets you connect with friends and groups and share entries. We do not review, endorse, or take responsibility for what other users write, share, or do, inside or outside the app. Your dealings with other users are solely between you and them.

7. Using Dialect well

Please do not use Dialect to break the law; to harass, threaten, or harm anyone; to share content you do not have the right to share; to try to access other people's accounts or data; to interfere with the service or overload it; or to copy, resell, or reverse-engineer the app. We may limit, suspend, or close an account that does these things, at our discretion.

8. Scripture text, our materials, and other services

Bible text is shown from the translations credited in the app, under their own licences. The app's design, writing, artwork, and software belong to us; you may use them only to use Dialect. Dialect relies on services run by others (such as Apple, Google, Supabase, and RevenueCat); we are not responsible for their availability, actions, or terms.

9. Keep your own copy; ending your use

We work to keep your journal safe and backed up, but no service is perfect and data can be lost. You are responsible for keeping your own copy of anything you value, using the export in Settings. You can stop using Dialect at any time and delete your account in Settings; deletion follows the timeline in the Privacy Policy. We may change, suspend, or discontinue Dialect or any part of it at any time; if we shut the app down, we will try to give reasonable notice so you can export your journal first.

10. No warranties

Dialect is provided "as is" and "as available", with all faults and without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including any warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, accuracy, and quiet enjoyment, and any warranties arising from course of dealing or usage. We do not warrant that Dialect will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or free of harmful components, that any content or suggestion will be accurate, appropriate, or helpful, or that your data will not be lost.

11. Assumption of risk and release

You use Dialect voluntarily and entirely at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, you release us, and anyone who works with us to provide Dialect, from all claims, demands, losses, and liabilities of every kind, known or unknown, arising from or related to your use of Dialect — including its suggestions and reflections, decisions you make after using it, your interactions with other users, what other users share, the loss, exposure, or corruption of your data, and any interruption of the service. If you are a California resident, you waive California Civil Code section 1542, which says: "A general release does not extend to claims that the creditor or releasing party does not know or suspect to exist in his or her favor at the time of executing the release and that, if known by him or her, would have materially affected his or her settlement with the debtor or released party." You waive any similar law in any other place.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event will we, or anyone who works with us to provide Dialect, be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, revenue, goodwill, or emotional distress, arising from or related to Dialect or these terms, however caused and under any theory of liability, even if we were told such damages were possible. Our total liability for all claims of any kind arising from or related to Dialect or these terms is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid for Dialect in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) US $50.

Some places do not allow certain warranties to be excluded or liability to be limited, so some of sections 10–12 may not apply to you. In that case they apply to the fullest extent the law allows, and nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, such as for fraud or wilful misconduct.

13. Your responsibility to us

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless us and anyone who works with us to provide Dialect from any claims, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your use or misuse of Dialect, your breach of these terms, or your violation of any law or anyone else's rights.

14. Disputes

15. Apple and Google

These terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google, and we — not they — are responsible for Dialect and its content. Apple and Google have no obligation to provide support or maintenance for it. If you downloaded Dialect from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. If anything here conflicts with a store's terms for an app downloaded from that store, the store's terms win to the extent of the conflict.

16. General

These terms, with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about Dialect. They are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where the law of the place you live requires otherwise. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, that part is limited to the minimum extent necessary and the rest remains in force. Our not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer these terms; we may transfer them, for example to a company we form to operate Dialect, and they will continue to bind you. We may update these terms as Dialect changes; if a change is material, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, and continuing to use Dialect afterwards means you accept the updated terms.
